Formula, recorded as scope and not yet verified against a primary source: Fuel burn scales approximately with engine power output, commonly estimated as a specific fuel consumption per horsepower hour, and range equals usable fuel divided by burn rate times speed. The seamanship rule of thirds reserves one third of fuel for the outward leg, one third for return and one third in reserve.
