Formula, recorded as scope and not yet verified against a primary source: Coverage equals income replacement, computed as the present value of the income to be replaced over the dependency period, plus outstanding debts and final expenses, plus future education costs, less existing assets and existing cover. The alternative income multiple method is a shortcut that ignores the dependency period.
