Ellipse Calculator

Ellipse: a planned Super Calculator tool. Covers semi-major axis a and semi-minor axis b. Stub page while the tool and its worked example are prepared.

Ellipse Calculator is a planned calculator in the mathematics section of Super Calculator, covering geometry and trigonometry.

What this calculator will compute

Inputs: semi-major axis a, semi-minor axis b and or axis and eccentricity.

Outputs: area, perimeter, eccentricity, focal points, latus rectum and standard equation.

Formula, recorded as scope and not yet verified against a primary source: Area = pi a b exactly. Perimeter has no elementary closed form and requires the complete elliptic integral of the second kind, with Ramanujan’s second approximation pi(3(a+b) - sqrt((3a+b)(a+3b))) accurate to better than one part in 10^7 for moderate eccentricity. Focal distance c = sqrt(a^2 - b^2).
