Formula, recorded as scope and not yet verified against a primary source: Design heat load equals the sum of fabric losses (area times U value times temperature difference) plus ventilation losses (air changes times volume times volumetric heat capacity times temperature difference) plus internal and solar gains. The rule-of-thumb per square foot method is not equivalent and routinely oversizes.
