Inputs: area (m2 or sq ft), target R value or U value (n), material conductivity (W/mK), joist spacing (mm or in) and existing insulation depth (mm).
Outputs: thickness required (mm or in), packs required (n), achieved U value (W/m2K) and cost (currency).
Formula, recorded as scope and not yet verified against a primary source: Roll or batt count equals area divided by pack coverage times one plus a fitting allowance; achieved R value or U value follows from thickness divided by thermal conductivity, with a correction for thermal bridging through joists that reduces the effective value below the nominal figure.
