Retaining Wall Design Calculator

Retaining Wall Design: a planned Super Calculator tool. Covers wall height. Stub page: the tool, its formula and a worked example are not published yet.

Retaining Wall Design Calculator is a planned calculator in the engineering section of Super Calculator, covering structural engineering.

What this calculator will compute

Inputs: wall height, soil unit weight and friction angle, surcharge, water table depth, wall geometry and base dimensions and friction coefficient.

Outputs: active and passive pressures, overturning and resisting moments, factors of safety for overturning, sliding and bearing, bearing pressure distribution and required base width.

Formula, recorded as scope and not yet verified against a primary source: Active earth pressure by Rankine: Ka = (1 - sin phi)/(1 + sin phi), giving a triangular pressure distribution with resultant 0.5 Ka gamma H^2 acting at H/3. Coulomb theory includes wall friction. Stability requires factors of safety against overturning, sliding and bearing, typically 1.5, 1.5 and 3.0.
