Formula, recorded as scope and not yet verified against a primary source: Roof area equals plan area times the pitch multiplier, which equals the square root of (1 plus (rise over run) squared). North American roofing is quantified in squares of 100 square feet. Ridge, hip and valley lengths add material and are computed separately.
