Formula, recorded as scope and not yet verified against a primary source: Required bearing area = service load divided by allowable soil bearing pressure. Thickness is governed by one-way and two-way (punching) shear, with punching checked on a perimeter at d/2 from the column face. Flexural reinforcement from the moment at the column face.
