Steel Beam Size Calculator
Steel Beam Size: a planned Super Calculator tool. Covers span and loading. Stub page: the tool, its formula and a worked example are not published yet.
Steel Beam Size Calculator is a planned calculator in the engineering section of Super Calculator, covering structural engineering.
What this calculator will compute
Inputs: span, loading, support conditions, steel grade, unbraced length, deflection limit and design code.
Outputs: required section modulus, suggested sections, utilization ratio, deflection check, shear check and lateral torsional buckling capacity.
Formula, recorded as scope and not yet verified against a primary source: Required plastic section modulus Z = Mu/(phi Fy) under AISC 360 load and resistance factor design with phi = 0.90, or W = MEd/(fy/gamma_M0) under Eurocode 3 with gamma_M0 = 1.00. Lateral torsional buckling reduces capacity where the compression flange is unbraced.
