Formula, recorded as scope and not yet verified against a primary source: Tiles required equal surface area divided by the effective tile area including the grout joint, times one plus a cut and breakage allowance. Effective tile area uses tile dimension plus joint width in each direction, which matters at small formats such as mosaic.
