Formula, recorded as scope and not yet verified against a primary source: Available towing capacity equals gross combination mass rating minus the loaded vehicle mass; payload equals gross vehicle mass rating minus kerb mass minus tongue or nose weight. Tongue weight should sit at roughly 10% to 15% of trailer weight for a conventional hitch, and below that threshold trailer sway becomes likely.
